Sat.18th July 2009:- Ashfield F & A C 5 v 2 Bo`ness United. Kick-Off 4.00pm. (Match to be played at Westfield Park, Dunipace). A terrific performance from the `field against East SuperLeague Opponents, Goals from Thomson, A Smith (2), Wright & trialist secured a great victory.

Sun.19th July 2009:- Ashfield F & A C 1 v 1 Dunipace (Ashfield win 6-5 on Pens). Kick-Off 4pm (Match to be played at Westfield Park, Dunipace). Alan Smith equalised midway through the Second Half to take the game to penalties.

Sat.25th July 2009:- Kilbirnie Ladeside 4 v 2 Ashfield F & A C - Kick-Off 2.00pm. Two cracking goals from Craig Smith (2) was not enough to prevent Ashfield going down to a very good Kilbirnie Ladeside Team. Despite missing 8 regulars the `field put up a decent show on a scorching afternoon.

Wed.29th July 2009:- Ashfield F & A C 9 v 0 Erskine Amateurs- Kick-Off 7.15pm. Ashfield finished their pre-season matches with a rout against Erskine Amateurs. Goals from Fraser (3), Thomson (2), Craig Smith, Jim Smith and Tony Chalmers (2).

Sat.24th Oct.2009:- Vale of Leven 0 v 7 Ashfield F & A C - Kick-Off 12noon. Ashfield produced a terrific attacking display against difficult opponents and went on a goal spree prior to next week`s Scottish Junior Cup Tie at St Anthony`s. Goals from Chalmers (3), Carmichael (2), Thomson & Jim Smith completed the rout.

Sectional League Cup (Central) - Section 6 2009/2010:-

Sat.1st Aug.2009:- Yoker Athletic 0 v 1 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. A wonder strike from Mark Thomson ensured Ashfield left Holm Park with the three points in a tough opening day fixture.

Wed.5th Aug.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 2 v 0 Maryhill. Kick-Off 7.15pm. Two brilliantly taken goals from Darren O`Donnell (2), one in each half saw off a plucky Maryhill side at Saracen Park this evening.

Sat.8th Aug.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 5 v 1 Glasgow Perthshire. Kick-Off.2pm . A great attacking performance from Ashfield saw them coast past neighbours Perthshire. Goals from Martin(2), O`Donnell, Chalmers & C Smith sealed the victory.

Tues.11th Aug.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 2 v 1 Clydebank. Kick-Off 7pm. A great victory for Ashfield with goals from Sean Fraser & Paul Maxwell ensured the `field topped the Group for the second year running.

Wed.19th Aug.2009:- East Kilbride Thistle 0 v 2 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 6.30pm. A great team performance against a strong East Kilbride Team ensured the `field reached the Semi Final for the second year running. A terrific achievement. Two second half goals from Paul Maxwell(2) capped off a great night.

Tues.25th Aug.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 0 v 0 Arthurlie. Kick-Off 6.30pm. (Arthurlie win 6-5 on pens) A keenly contested Semi Final ended all square with defences on top throughout. It was a drmatic penalty shoot-out with Arthurlie eventually coming out on top 6-5.

West SuperLeague - First Division 2009/2010:-

Sat.15th Aug.2009:- Neilston F C 3 v 1 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. Ashfield lost the opening day fixture at Brig`o`lea Park, Neilston after making an impressive start. Tony Chalmers opened the scoring for Ashfield , however the `field conceded before Half Time. Two late goals secured victory for the home team.

Sat.22nd Aug.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 2 v 2 Glenafton Athletic. Kick-Off 2pm. Two first half goals from Mark Thomson & Craig Smith were not enough to secure the three points for the `field as late goals from Feroz & Livingston denied the `field`s first win in the SuperLeague.

Sat.29th Aug.2009:- Annbank United 3 v 0 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. Ashfield paid the price for missed chances at New Pebble Park as the hosts finished their chances clinically to inflict the `fields biggest defeat for a year.

Sat.5th Sept.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 2 v 1 Girvan F C. Kick-Off 2pm. A terrific football Match played in soggy conditions with Ashfield coming from 1-0 down to secure their first League victory of the Season with goals from Mark Thomson & Tony Chalmers.

Sat.12th Sept.2009:- Clydebank 0 v 1 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. A terrific result for the `field soaking the Bankies pressure and in the end producing the beter of the chances resulting in Darren O`Donnell`s 89th Minute winner.

Sat 19th Sept.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 3 v 1 Cumnock Juniors. Kick-Off 2pm. A terrific win for the `field. Early first half goals from Paul Maxwell (2) and an 83rd Minute finish from Darren O`Donnell ensured a 3-1 win against a very good team.

Sat.26th Sept.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 4 v 1 Maybole Juniors. Kick-Off 2pm. Goals from Alistair Martin, Shaun Fraser, Mark Thomson & Paul Maxwell capped off a great week for Ashfield and puts the Springburn Team second in the Table.

Sat.3rd Oct.2009:- Ashfield F & A C 3 v 0 Kilsyth Rangers. Kick-Off 2pm. A very impressive performance from the `field against high flying Kilsyth to make it 5 League wins in a row. Goals from Carmichael, Maxwell & Chalmers (Pen) secured the three points.

Sat.10th Oct.2009:- R`Glen Glencairn 3 v 2 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. A great advert for Junior Football as both teams gave their all with passion and skill in an encounter that could have gone either way. Unfortunately for the `field it was a narrow defeat. First half goals from Tony Chalmers & Paul Maxwell were not enough in this exciting encounter.

Sat.7th Nov.2009:- Renfrew 3 v 1 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. Ashfield incredibly lost this Match and ended up with 7 Men despite going ahead in the 7th Minute through Paul Maxwell. 1-1 at Half Time, the`field had many chances to secure the points however lost 2 late goals amid scenes of mayhem.

Sat.31st Oct.2009:- Second Round:- St Anthony`s 3 v 2 Ashfield F & A C. Kick-Off 2pm. Ashfield`s long wait for the `holy grail` will have to wait for another year. Trailing 1-0 at Half Time & 3-0 midway through the second half, the `field fought back with goals from Darren O`Donnell & Paul Maxwell, however despite further chances, St Anthony`s progressed to Round 3.

Renfrew 3 Ashfield F & A C 1 , Western Park, Renfrew - Kick-Off 2pm

Ashfield headed over to Renfrew yesterday looking to consolidate their position at the Top of the Division and also looking to bounce back from last week`s exit from the Scottish Junior Cup. The Match itself turned out to be an absolute cracker with both teams having a real go at each other with the visitors from Springburn producing a very good display only for it to go wrong in the closing minutes. Unfortunately the crowd leaving the ground should have been talking about the Match itself however the Referee`s decisions took centre stage in the discussions.

Ashfield had made a couple of changes from last week`s Match at McKenna Park and started the game very well with a tempo that Renfrew struggled to Match. In the 2nd Minute the Referee had a big decision to make when Paul Maxwell rounded the Keeper in the box and was unceremoniously brought down. A stonewall penalty ? and a possible Red Card for the Keeper - `no` was the Referee`s decision as he decided to give Ashfield the advantage ? The Ball was eventually cleared by the Renfrew defence.

Ashfield did not let this affect them and Mark Thomson & Alistair Martin were linking up well with the front two and in 7 Minutes Ashfield got their reward when Mark Thomson played a lovely floated ball through to Paul Maxwell who broke the Renfrew offside trap to glance a header past the onrushing Keeper to put the `field 1-0 up. Renfrew 0 Ashfield 1.

To their Credit the home side gradually forced their way back into the Match and started to test the Ashfield back four with the Renfrew No 9 McLean and the No 11 causing problems. Ashfield to their credit however managed to restrict the `frew to Free-Kicks from outside the box. In the 24th Minute Ashfield should have gone further ahead when Ali Martin found himself running through on goal only for his floated shot to be well saved by the Renfrew keeper. Shortly after Darren O`Donnell found himself through however miscontrolled in front of goal to the relief of the home support.

Just on the half hour mark Ashfield had a major let off after Chris Prior saved well from the Renfrew forward. The ball was parried out to the edge of the six yard box and the onrushing Renfrew Midfielder lashed the ball against the upright and the ball was eventually cleared to safety. This relief for Ashfield was only short-lived and Renfrew pulled level in the 36th Minute when a low hard ball into the six yard box was met by McLean, who stabbed the ball under Prior to put the home side level. Renfrew 1 Ashfield 1.

The game continued to flow from end to end and despite the committed & physical challenges that were going on it had never been a particularly dirty match.

HALF TIME:- RENFREW 1 ASHFIELD 1

As in the first half Ashfield started at great pace again and were unlucky not to go ahead in the 47th Minute. A terrific free-kick from Mark Thomson cracked against the base of the Renfrew post. Mark Smith who started only his 2nd game for Ashfield played very well in the middle of the park & can be very pleased with his contribution. Mark was replaced by Shaun Fraser midway through the half and he carried on the good work driving hard at the Renfrew defence.

It was all Ashfield this half as the visitors took command and were unlucky with two chances from Corners kicks. Firstly Paul Maxwell outjumped the Renfrew keeper only to see his effort cleared on the goal line. Shortly after Mark Thomson headed narrowly wide from a great delivery by Alistair Martin. Darren O`Donnell was replaced by Craig Smith and shortly after the woodwork came to Renfrew`s aid when Ali Martin`s shot at the far post came back off the upright. No one could have envisaged what was about to happen in the game, however it started with Ashfield`s Jamie Reilly being given a straight Red for a late tackle. It had been Jamie`s first infringement in the Match & a yellow would have sufficed. Anyway it didn`t deter Ashfield from pushing forward to try and secure the three points.

The game turned on its head in the 84th Minute when Ali Martin & Craig Smith had a great chance at the far post to prod Ashfield ahead however the ball somehow got trapped between them and the chance was over. Immediately the ball was played long and over the top of the `field defence. McLean raced onto the ball and lobbed Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal from 25 yards out. It was an excellent finish from the Renfrew forward. Renfrew 2 Ashfield 1. The home side then used their experience to see the minutes out with many injuries taking place. Craig Smith for Ashfield had been caught by the `frew`s keeper`s follow through from a clearance on the 90th Minute however the game raged on. The ball broke through to Chris Prior in the visitors goal who lost control and brought down the Renfrew forward. The Referee pointed straight to the spot despite the visitor`s protests. No more so than Jim Smith who was given a Red Card for dissent along with Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal.

With Ashfield down to 8 Men, Centre Forward Paul Maxwell took over in goal however had no chance from the penalty as McLean lashed in Renfrew`s third and his own hat-trick. Renfrew 3 Ashfield 1. A real cruel blow for Ashfield who couldn`t believe what had unfolded. The Match itself now was extremely tousy and the Referee brought the Match to a close amid scenes of players squaring up to each other. The Referee obviously not content with 3 Red Cards, sent off Craig Smith of Ashfield and the No 11 of Renfrew to leave everyone in the crowd bewildered.

FULL TIME:- RENFREW 3 ASHFIELD 1

Man of the Match:- An all round good performance from Ashfield despite the result. The `field were up against a physical challenge this week and young Paul Mangan had an exceptional match at left back in only his 2nd season in Junior Football.

Latest News from Saracen Park:-
Ashfield went down 3-1 in controversial circumstances at Western Park, Renfrew this afternoon (7/11/09) in the West SuperLeague First Division. It had been an excellent performance from Ashfield & despite having the bulk of possession & chances, the `field could not capitalise & lost 2 late goals in an incredible end to the game which saw 5 players Red-Carded - 4 for Ashfield & 1 for Renfrew. Ashfield crashed out of the Emirates Airline`s sponsored Scottish Junior Cup to St Anthony`s this afternoon (31/10/09) at McKenna Park. Trailing 1-0 at Half time & 3-0 midway through the Second Half, the `field fought back to narrowly lose out 3-2 in a frantic finish to the Match. Two late goal-line clearances & a missed penalty unfortunately were not turned into goals & the long wait for Junior Cup success now extends to 101 years. Ashfield were not in League Action this afternoon, however warmed up for next week`s Scottish Junior Cup Tie at St Anthony`s with a 7-0 win over Vale Of Leven at Alexandria. An excellent attacking display from the `field with goals from Chalmers (3), Carmichael (2), Thomson, & Jim Smith at a very difficult venue.

Ashfield struggled into the 2nd round of the West of Scotland Cup this afternoon (17/10/09) against a well organised & determined Newmains Utd. The scoreline after ninety minutes was 0-0 with the 'field winning 4-3 on Penalty Kicks with Tony Chalmers scoring the winning Penalty. Airlines Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round Draw has been made and we have been drawn against St Anthony's away at McKenna Park on Saturday 31st October with a 2pm Kick-Off.

Ashfield lost out narrowly 3-2 in a pulsating 90 minutes against Rutherglen Glencairn at the New Clyde Gateway Stadium this afternoon (10/10/09). After taking the lead through Tony Chalmers midway through the first half, the `field conceded a couple of avoidable goals to find themselves chasing the game & despite Paul Maxwell pulling Ashfield level, another goal midway through the Second Half gave the home side victory. Ashfield continued their excellent League form this afternoon by defeating Kilsyth Rangers 3-0 at a windswept Saracen Park & now top the West SuperLeague First Division. New signing Del Carmichael opened the scoring in the first half with Paul Maxwell and Tony Chalmers adding the goals in the Second Half. Ashfield secured their 4th League Victory in a row to hit the top of the West SuperLeague First Division after defeating Maybole by 4-1 at Saracen Park this afternoon (26/9/09). Goals from Martin, Fraser, Thomson & Maxwell ensured Maybole`s first visit to Saracen Park since the 1950/1951 Season was not a happy one. Ashfield won their 3rd League game in a row by producing an outstanding display against a very good Cumnock side this afternoon (19/9/09). Two goals from Paul Maxwell in the first half & a terrific goal from Darren O`Donnell with 7 minutes remaining ensured a 3-1 win for the `field. A dramatic 89th Minute Winner by Darren O`Donnell ensured a memorable win for Ashfield this afternoon (12/9/09) against Clydebank at Holm Park. The `field had defended magnificently all afternoon and produced a few scary moments for Clydebank particularly in the Second Half before the goal which was put in by Darren after a cut back from Alistair Martin on the left. Ashfield won Sectional League Cup Group 6 this evening (11/08/09) defeating Clydebank 2-1 at Saracen Park. The Final game of the season was played out in low key fashion at McKenna Park, Govan this evening with both sides putting out changed teams. Ashfield suffered a set back in their Promotion bid this evening at Milburn Park, losing 4-1 to a very spirited Vale of Leven team who escaped relegation as a result. Its another agonising Penalty Kick Shoot-Out defeat as Ashfield are eliminated from the Central League Cup at Shotts this afternoon(4/4/09). Ashfield lost 3-2 today (07/03/09) in the League against Cumbernauld Utd. This was the first away defeat for Ashfield in all Competitions in 90 minutes since August 2008. Ashfield suffer another Cup heartbreak - this time in the West of Scotland Cup this afternoon losing to Glenafton on penalty kicks after the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes. Ashfield came agonisingly close to putting the Cup favourites out at Saracen Park this afternoon. Leading 2-1 with 10 minutes to go a major cup upset looked on. Ashfield suffered a heavy defeat tonight (4-0) in the Semi-Final of the Sectional League Cup at Saracen Park. Ashfield created plenty of chances but could not find the net. Paul Maxwell was also taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle to cap a miserable night for the 'field'. St Anthony`s 3 Ashfield F & A C 2 , McKenna Park, Glasgow - Kick-Off 2pm

Ashfield`s long awaited success in the Scottish Junior Cup will have to wait for another year as the `field were beaten 3-2 this afternoon at McKenna Park, Govan. After a low-key start to the game, the Match really took off in the Second Half with goals a plenty, a missed penalty, a sending-off , numerous chances squandered however the end result is that St Anthony`s will be in the hat for Round 3.

A balmy afternoon greeted both Teams this afternoon and although there had been plenty of rain in Glasgow in the last 48 hours, the pitch was in excellent condition. Ashfield were in their changed strip of Yellow & Blue hoops & the Ants were in their normal Green & White hoops. The Crowd of Approx.100 were treated to a low key start with both teams giving each other respect and it took almost 20 minutes for the first chance of the Match, which fell to Ali Martin on the left hand side of the box. His shot was hit well & blocked by the legs of the Ants keeper Halpin.

St Anthony`s all of a sudden started to find gaps in the Ashfield rearguard and they almost went ahead in the 26th Minute after good work on the wing. The ball was played across the goalmouth & was knocked in at the far post by Madden however the Linesman had already flagged for Offside. A real-let off for Ashfield, a warning which they did not heed and in the 34th Minute the home side went ahead after some concerted pressure. A weak ball was played out of defence with the Ashfield midfield being dispossessed of the ball which was played through to Gary Madden. His low shot was saved well by Prior however the rebound was knocked into the empty net by Jamie Docherty to put the home side 1-0 up. St Anthony`s 1 Ashfield 0.

Ashfield had struggled to play their normal passing game and they knew they were up against it against an eager St Anthony`s side. Both teams cancelled each other out for the remaining minutes of the half.

The first half had been slightly subdued for a Junior Cup Tie however the Second Half more than made up for it as both teams had a `real go` at each other. Just as Ashfield were beginning to assert themselves in the game, St Anthony`s new signing Jamie Docherty picked up the ball fully 25 yards out before curling a shot into the top corner of the net to the delight of the home support. St Anthony`s 2 Ashfield 0.

A real blow for Ashfield who immediately brought on Darren O`Donnell for left Back Davie Gumley in a bid to salvage the Match. The Ashfield forward made a really good impact on the game and immediately was linking up well with the Ashfield forwards and also brought out a great one-handed save from the Ants Keeper. A lovely move involving Thomson, O`Donnell and Chalmers resulted in the latter being pulled down inside the box & Referee McFaulds pointed immediately to the spot. The normally reliable Tony Chalmers placed his penalty wide of the post and the `field had missed a real chance to get back in the game especially as the Ants went straight up the park and increased their lead. A free kick was awarded to the home team just outside Ashfield`s box. The Free-Kick was drilled low into the wall however the ball went through, with the ball being deflected past Chris Prior to put the home side 3-0 up. St Anthony`s 3 Ashfield 0.

It was make or break for Ashfield and Craig Smith was brought on to try & salvage something from the Match. Ashfield were knocking the ball about well and were causing alarm in the home defence after some excellent deliveries by Mark Thomson. With 13 minutes remaining a lovely delivery from Thomson was headed on by Paul Maxwell and drilled home by the onrushing Darren O`Donnell to reduce the deficit. St Anthony`s 3 Ashfield 1.

It was all Ashfield now & the Ants were pinned back. Alistair Martin almost scored with 10 minutes to go after a `stramash` in the box saw his net-bound effort cleared off the line. Two minutes later and it was `game-on`. A lovely free-kick from Mark Thomson was met by Paul Maxwell and his glancing header ended up in the corner of the net to the delight of the travelling support. St Anthony`s 3 Ashfield 2.

St Anthony`s were trying to slow the game down at every opportunity and Ashfield`s frustration was evident with Thomson, Fraser & Mangan all being booked. Another chance fell to Ali Martin in the box however his half shot sailed over. With minutes remaining Ashfield`s Captain was sent off for speaking out of turn to the Referee and the home side played out the remainder of the game at Ashfield`s Corner flag area. A great Second Half to watch however it is St Anthony`s that will be in the hat for the next round. As for the `field it is back to League business next Saturday and a trip to Renfrew.

It was a David v Goliath scenario this afternoon at a sun drenched Victoria Park. Newmains Utd battled extremely hard all afternoon to take the match to Penalty Kicks with Ashfield, who made seven changes from last week`s match, relieved to progress into the next round winning 4-3 on spot kicks.

A beautiful Autumn afternoon greeted the teams on to the pitch for this West of Scotland Cup clash. Ashfield started the better side, trying to play passing football on a difficult playing surface. It was the visitors that almost grabbed the lead after eleven minutes. Ali Martin whipped in a corner to the near post area which was met by the head of Del Carmichael but the ball crashed off the bar (Pic Below)

It was one way traffic at this stage with Ashfield dominating the match but the Newmains rearguard were holding firm and frustrating the Ashfield forwards with timely challenges. The next chance fell to Ali Martin after twenty minutes but his shot from an acute angle was blocked for a corner. The resultant corner saw Jim Smith try his luck from twenty yards but the ball sailed wide of the post.

Ashfield could still not break the deadlock even though they had the vast possesion of play in the match. Ali Martin saw a twenty five yard free kick well held by the Newmains Keeper after twenty five minutes. The best chance of the match fell to the home side though after thirty nine minutes. A nice interchange in Midfield resulted in the Newmains Striker cutting inside the Ashfield box and shooting narrowly wide of Prior's near post.

Half time approached but Ashfield almost scored with a brilliant effort from Craig Smith. A cross from Gordon Passmore seemed to be behind 'Smiddy' but the Striker tried an overhead kick which was tipped over the bar by the Newmains Stopper.(Pic Below)

The second half started virtually like the first with Ashfield commanding the play but could still not puncture the stuffy Newmains defence. Newmains had rarely threatened in the first period but it was clear to see that they were gaining confidence and started to hit Ashfield on the counter attack.

Ashfield Manager, Stevie Rankin, had clearly seen enough as he made some substitutions to try and press for the opening goal. Mark Thomson, Paul Maxwell and Tony Chalmers were all brought on but to their credit Newmains kept battling and thwarted any Ashfield attack.

As Penalty Kicks loomed, Mark Thomson almost scored the vital goal but his net bound header was flicked wide by Darren O'Donnell from three yards out.

The referee played approx six minutes of injury time before blowing for the final whistle and Penalty Kicks.

Ashfield narrowly lost out this afternoon and therefore their chance to extend their lead at the top of the League. This was an eagerly awaited encounter and the large crowd were not disappointed as both teams gave their all in a pulsating 90 Minutes. The home side were ecstatic when the Referee brought proceedings to an end and it was going to be tough on the team who lost this afternoon as it was played at breakneck speed throughout with the forwards getting the best of their marking defenders this afternoon.

A mild afternoon welcomed both teams with Ashfield playing in their second strip of yellow & blue hoops. The game started off at great gusto with neat interchanging passing throughout the midfield areas coupled with some hard but fair tackles. It was the visitors that started the brighter and Maxwell & Smith up front were lively early on however the best chance of the opening exchanges came from the home side when the Glens Captain, Dickson bulleted a 22 yard drive an inch wide of Chris Prior`s post to the relief of the away support.

Shortly after however it was Ashfield that were celebrating after a wonderful goal from Tony Chalmers. The ball was played up to the left hand side of the box where Craig Smith managed to divert to ball into the path of an onrushing Tony Chalmers and the midfielder despatched his shot with the aid of a deflection into the roof of the net to send the visitors wild with delight. The goal gave Ashfield extra confidence and for the next period were playing some good football with Mark Thomson & Paul Maxwell settling into really good games. The Glens forwards were linking up well and were causing problems to Reilly & Smith at the back. Unfortunately for Ashfield Jamie Reilly had to be replaced due to injury and Jim Smith teamed up with his brother at the back, however minutes later Ashfield were pegged back by a well worked Glencairn goal. For the first time in the Match the impressive Tony Fraser was involved in a Glens build up and his low hard cross to the far post was met by the onrushing Paul McLaughlin who bulleted his shot past Prior for the Glens equaliser. R`Glen Glencairn 1 Ashfield 1.

All of a sudden the game changed and the Glens swarmed forward and within 90 seconds were ahead, Mark Thomson, who had an excellent Match for the `field, was caught in midfield and the ball was played through to McGladrigan. The ex-Ashfield striker drove the ball low and hard into the net to the delight of the home support. R`Glen Glencairn 2 Ashfield 1.

It was certainly `game on` and the vociferous crowd did not have to wait long for the next piece of action. The Glens No 3 who incredibly had avoided being put in Referee Wake`s book for an earlier infringement found himself caught up with Ashfield midfielder Shaun Fraser. After an altercation both players received `yellows`and the `field were awarded a Free-Kick.

Mark Thomson whipped in a superb Free-Kick and despite the attentions of the Glens Defence Paul Maxwell glanced a header into the top corner of the net for his 8th goal of the season. An impressive finish from the Ashfield legend ! R`Glen Glencairn 2 Ashfield 2.

HALF TIME:- RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN 2 ASHFIELD 2

As always happens, a Match that had everything in the first half probably did not live up to expectations in the second half as both teams cancelled and stifled each other slightly. Ashfield certainly had more of the possession however the Glens made more of the chances and ended up edging this thriller.

Chances were at premium in the second half compared to the first and Ashfield were still playing some good football driven on by Captain Mark Thomson. Referee Chris Wake however involved himself in proceedings in the 56th minute when he overruled his linesman after Paul Maxwell had found the net with a header stating offside despite the linesman keeping his flag down - a very controversial decision. However as the half wore on the Glens, shooting down the slope, started to cause the `field back four problems and no more so than in the 65th Minute when Paul McLaughlin picked the ball up on the edge of the Ashfield box, cut in, and drove a shot under the body of Chris Prior to the roar of the home fans. R`Glen Glencairn 3 Ashfield 2.

Ashfield made a quick change by bringing Darren O`Donnell on & shortly after, Ryan Cairley, to try and salvage something from the Match. Tony Chalmers was trying his utmost on the right hand side, ably supported by Gordon Passmore, & it was Tony who brought out a great save from the Glens keeper in the 73rd minute after a mazy run.
Glencairn should have sealed the match shortly after however were thwarted by an excellent one handed reflex save from Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal. The Match flowed from one penalty box to another however try as the visitors did they could not penetrate the home defence and the Glens took the honours. It had been a great game and if both teams carry on in the same vein then they will both have good seasons. There was also a good crowd at the game which is also encouraging.

An emphatic win today for the Springburn team in blustery conditions takes Ashfield Football & Athletic Club to the top of the West SuperLeague First Division, which is a remarkable achievement considering 3 Seasons ago we were in the lowest league. New signing Del Carmichael opened the scoring after twenty minutes, with a blistering shot into the corner of net after great link up play with Paul Maxwell. Kilsyth had a strong wind behind them in the First Half but could not penetrate the Ashfield goal. Paul Maxwell and Tony Chalmers scored in the second half to take Ashfield to the top of the League.

The wind was howling around Saracen Park this afternoon as the teams ran on to the pitch. Kilsyth won the toss and elected to kick with the wind for the first half. Both teams had been in good form, so an entertaining game was anticipated. The early stages were cagey with both teams reluctant to open up. Ashfield had new signing Del Carmichael in their forward line which almost paid off after fifteen minutes. A nice one-two at the edge of the Kilsyth box resulted in Carmichael firing in a deflected shot which the 'Rangers' keeper tipped well just over the bar.

Kilsyth were also looking dangerous with their number 10 lively in the forward line but even against a strong wind, Ashfield looked the more dangerous going forward and the opening goal was scored after twenty minutes. Paul Maxwell picked the ball up on the left side and whipped over a cross to Carmichael, who's initial shot was blocked, but the big Striker had a second opportunity as it fell back to him and he made no mistake by firing it low in the corner of the net from ten yards out. Ashfield 1 Kilsyth Rangers 0.

HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 1 KILSYTH RANGERS 0

Ashfield started the second half with the wind behind them and this paid off almost immediately when they were awarded a corner after fifty five minutes. Ali Martin whipped over a fierce corner to the near post area which was met by the head of Paul Maxwell. The ball flew high into the net from close range to give the 'Field' a great advantage. Ashfield 2 Kilsyth Rangers 0.

Ashfield were now in great command of this match and piled forward with every opportunity. Mark Thomson was having a great game in midfield supported by the eager Shaun Fraser. Kilsyth could not muster a fight back with every threatening ball being dealt with by Alan Smith, Gordon Passmore, Davie Gumley and Jamie Reilly at the back for the home team.

Ashfield maintained the pressure on Kilsyth and were rewarded after seventy five minutes. A long throw was delivered into the Kilsyth box in the range of Paul Maxwell, who tried to shield the ball but was covered by the arms of the Kilsyth Defender(above). Referee, McCrossan spotted the infringement straight away and awarded a penalty. Tony Chalmers stepped up and calmly wrong footed the Kilsyth goalkeeper to increase the 'Field's' lead. Ashfield 3 Kilsyth Rangers 0.

The match was virtually over at this stage but the home side still threatened the Kilsyth goal area. Craig Smith was brought on and almost scored after he was released down the right side before cutting in only to see his shot blocked from the Kilsyth keeper. Ali Martin then had the next effort as he cut in and unleashed a 'rocket' from twenty five yards that caught the cross bar and was cleared.

The remaining minutes were then played out without incident with Ashfield moving to the top of the table!!!.

Man of the Match:- A terrific team performance from the `field this afternoon with special mentions to Alan Smith, Mark Thomson, Jamie Reilly & to Del Carmichael for his first goal in the Black & White hoops, however for the third week running Paul `Maxi` Maxwell was a real handful to the oppostion back four scoring one and making two. Well done `Maxi` !!

Ashfield welcomed Maybole to Saracen Park for the first time in many years and produced four quality finishes to take the famous Springburn outfit to the summit of the West SuperLeague First Division.

Both teams were eager from the Kick-off to take the game to each other and it was the visitors that started the stronger with the Ashfield Midfield still trying to get to grips with the game early on. A few early corners from Maybole were well cleared by the Ashfield defence. As the half wore on Ashfield started to get into their rythmn and with their first real piece of concerted pressure almost broke the deadlock when Paul Maxwell missed a header from a corner kick.

Ashfield almost incredibly took the lead on the 22nd Minute when Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal took a Free Kick from inside his own half which completely deceived the Maybole keeper and crashed off the underside of the bar to safety. Maybole, however went straight up the park and almost took the lead. A ball through the middle was collected by the Centre Forward & his shot was blocked by Prior only to be retrieved by the same player. His cutback was met by a colleague who slammed the ball against the post & Ashfield managed to clear.

Maybole were to pay for this & in the 26th Minute Ashfield took the lead. Some excellent work on the right wing resulted in the ball being played to Ali Martin at the far post and his downward shot bounced off the ground and over the Keeper to put the `field 1-0 up. Ashfield 1 Maybole 0.

Ashfield started to play some really good football with Chalmers on the right wing and Martin on the Left wing stretching the visitors & on the 34th Minute Ashfield found themselves 2-0 up. A superb through ball from Ali Martin found Paul Maxwell through one-on-one with the keeper however his shot was parried out to the onrushing Shaun Fraser who drilled the ball low & hard and into the corner of the net to put the `field 2-0 up. Ashfield 2 Maybole 0.

This gave Ashfield a nice cushion and they needed to consolidate before half time however a minute after scoring they found themselves pegged back by a strong Maybole attack. A corner was played to the far side of the six yard box and was met powerfully by the Maybole Centre Half and his looping header found the back of the net. Ashfield 2 Maybole 1.

HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 2 MAYBOLE 1

It been a very competitive first half and Ashfield knew they were in a game as the second half started off in the same fashion as the first. Ashfield however were beginning to string their passes together and Captain Mark Thomson & Shaun Fraser in the Midfield were beginning to take control. The next goal was going to be all important and it was the home side that got it in style. Ashfield were awared a Free-Kick 20 yards out after Paul Maxwell had been brought down. Mark Thomson delivered a dipping 20 yard shot which found the top left hand corner of the net to the delight of the home support. It really was a terrific strike. Ashfield 3 Maybole 1.

This was the cushion Ashfield needed and they started to pile on the pressure on the visitors with Tony Chlamers having two efforts cleared and saved by the Maybole keeper. Maybole were still dangerous and had a couple of chances, but were thwarted by Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal and Jamie Reilly at the back, who was having a great game against a physical forward line. As Maybole pushed forward Ashfield were beginning to find gaps in the home defence and with 4 minutes to go, Man of the Match Paul Maxwell found himself through one-on-one with the keeper. Maxi steadied himself and drilled the ball past the keeper for his 6th Goal of the Season. This capped off a fine display from the Ashfield Centre. Ashfield 4 Maybole 1.

As the Referee brought proceedings to an end, Ashfield have now won their last 4 League Matches against tough opposition in Girvan, Clydebank, Cumnock & Maybole and can go into next week`s encounter with Kilsyth Rangers with confidence. Well done the `field.

Man of the Match:- A great Team Performance from the `Meninblack&White` with everyone putting in a shift against tough opponents however for second week running Paul Maxwell gave the visitors defence a torrid time & capped off his performance with a fine goal.

Ashfield welcomed Cumnock to Saracen Park for the first time in 54 years and the match turned out to be worth waiting for especially for the home faithful. Both teams were in their changed strips this afternoon & the game started in blustery conditions. Ashfield had an early scare when Joe Gold in the Cumnock wing drove into the Ashfield Box only to be denied by a last gasp tackle from Jamie Reilly. Ashfield also started with confidence buoyed by their great win last weekend and the front two of Maxwell & O`Donnell were causing the Cumnock defence problems. No more so than in the 19th Minute. Darren O`Donnell picked up the ball up wide on the right & managed to break free of his marker before delivering an inch perfect cross for Paul Maxwell to glance his header into the corner of the net. Ashfield 1 Cumnock 0.

A great start for Ashfield and the home side began to dominate the middle of the park with Shaun Fraser winning his fair share of tackles. Cumnock were showing glimpses of being a very good team and Gareth Armstrong was proving a handful for the Ashfield back four, who remember Gareth from his Irvine Meadow days when he scored the winner in the Semi Final of the Evening Times Cup against the `field.

The Referee was taking a `no nonsense` approach & the No3 & No 5 of Cumnock were booked for their first offences. Following a Free Kick from the half way line in the 26th Minute, Ashfield increased their lead. Jim Smith, who passed a late fitness test, whipped in the Free-Kick which was met by Paul Maxwell on the edge of the box and his powerful header deceived the Cumnock keeper and ended up in the corner of the net. Ashfield 2 Cumnock 0.

This was a great start to the Match for Ashfield and they were well in control now and almost increased their lead 4 minutes later. An inswinging corner was met by Gordon Passmore and his net bound header was cleared off the line. In the 32nd Minute Darren O`Donnell almost produced a wonder goal after breaking free of his marker again and unleashing a 25 yarder which was well saved by the Cumnock keeper.

Cumnock came back strongly at Ashfield and had two chances in this excellent encounter. The Cumnock No 11 found some space 20 yards out and delivered a curling shot which was pushed round the post by Chris Prior. From the resultant corner Cumnock narrowly missed the upright with a header. Just on half time it was Ashfield`s turn again to go close. A lovely free-kick from Mark Thomson was met again by Paul Maxwell and his glancing header came back off the post to the relief of the Cumnock Team.

HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 2 CUMNOCK 0

It had been a great first half performance from Ashfield however Cumnock had a real go at Ashfield at the start of the second forcing early corners and they got their reward in the 51st Minute when a ball was played in from the right. Joe Gold, the Cumnock winger, reacted the quickest to half volley a right foot shot into the back of the net. It was `game on `now & Ashfield were determined not to lose a 2 goal lead as they had done earlier in the season against Glenafton. Ashfield 2 Cumnock 1

Ashfield fought hard to stem the Cumnock advance and the game was getting bogged down in Midfield, however in the 66th Minute Ashfield had a let off when a corner was met by a Cumnock forward and his header came back off the bar and was cleared to safety. Ashfield brought on Alan Smith for his brother Jim, and Tony Chalmers replaced Jamie Coll as the `field started to impose themselves again in the Match. With 7 Minutes remaining Ashfield sealed this terrrific win with a great goal by Darren O`Donnell. From a long throw in, Darren picked the ball up on the edge of the box before depsatching a curling shot into the top corner of the net to delight of the bench & home support. Ashfield 3 Cumnock 1.

The Match finished with both teams trying to increase their goal tally and Chris Prior in the Ashfield goal had to make two terrific saves to deny Cumnock and Ashfield`s sub Craig Smith had a low drive well saved by the Cumnock keeper.

The Referee brought proceedings to an end and Ashfield will be proud of their efforts against a very good Cumnock side. That`s 3 League games won in a row in this very competitive League and this has resulted in hoisting the Possil Side to 3rd Position with 2 home games coming up against Maybole & current League Leaders Kilsyth Rangers.

FINAL SCORE:- ASHFIELD 3 CUMNOCK 1

Man of the Match:- An all-round team effort from Ashfield, however Paul Maxwell proved a real handful for the Cumnock defence as well as winning a fair few defensive headers.

Clydebank 0 Ashfield F & A C 1 , Holm Park, Yoker - Kick-Off 2pm

Ashfield produced a superb performance this afternoon and took the three points after Darren O`Donnell finished off a lovely move on the left wing in the last minute to the delight of the Players, Management & Supporters. A large crowd assembled at the vastly improving Holm Park with, for the first Saturday in many months, the sun greeting the players onto the park. Both teams were wearing their traditional strips and this encounter was eagerly awaited.

Both Teams started off at great pace with the wingers on either side driving at the opposing defenders who stood firm in the early stages. The first chance of the Match fell to the Bankies who were awarded a Free-Kick on the edge of the Ashfield Box after 13 minutes. The `Wall` withheld the drive at goal and the ball was cleared to safety however this was a warning to the `field who were competing well, especially in the middle of the park. It was a really good contest with defences on top however the next chance again fell to the home side after excellent work on the left resulted in a cross being diverted narrowly wide of goal by the Bankies Centre Forward, Stevie Dallas, to the relief of the Ashfield defenders.

Two minutes later & it was Ashfield`s turn to go close after a lovely mazy run from Craig Smith resulted in the Ashfield Centre driving the ball narrowly over.

It was end to end stuff at this stage, however Ashfield had to re-organise the back four after Jim Smith had to go off with an injury & was replaced by his brother Alan, who like his brother, produced an outstanding display keeping the lively bankies forwards quiet.
As Half Time approached, Chris Prior in the Ashfield Goal produced a brilliant one handed save to deny Paul Allum and ensure the game went into the interval all square.

HALF TIME:- CLYDEBANK 0 ASHFIELD 0

The home side had put the `field under a fair bit of pressure during the first half however the Second Half produced a really even contest with the best chances falling to the Saracen Park side, capitalising on quick break-aways. This coupled with a really disciplined defensive display was to bear fruit later on in the Match. It was a real `tug-of-war` in the middle of the park with Mark Thomson & Ryan Cairley and then Shaun Fraser, having the best of the exchanges. Midway through the half both sides hit the woodwork within 3 minutes - firstly Chris Prior in the `field goal had to watch as a wicked cross was headed against the cross-bar by the onrushing Bankies forward and a few minutes later a looping shot by Craig Smith hit the top of the Bankies Bar.

Both teams made changes in a bid to win the Match with Charlie Hobbs coming on for Clydebank & Derek Carmichael making his first competitive appearance for Ashfield up front. However as the game headed towards time, it was the visitors who produced the bit of magic to seal the points this afternoon at Holm Park. The impressive Shaun Fraser played a delightful through ball to Alistair Martin on the left wing. The Left winger drove at the Clydebank defence, cutting the ball back to the onrushing Darren O`Donnell to scramble the ball home to the delight of the travelling support. This was O`Donnell`s 4th goal of the season and probably the most important of the campaign so far.

The game finished a bit tetchy and the Ashfield goalscorer found himself heading for an early bath after receiving a second yellow card. However it was the `field who held out for a memorable win to hoist themselves up to 5th place in the West SuperLeague First Division.

FINAL SCORE:- CLYDEBANK 0 ASHFIELD 1

Man of the Match:- All of the players in the Black & White hoops put in a tremendous shift this afternoon however in his first season in Junior Football, Jamie Coll did not put a foot wrong against a very talented Clydebank front line.

Ashfield F & A C 2 Girvan FC 1 , Saracen Park, Glasgow - Kick-Off 2pm

The Saracen Park turf survived the rain this week and looked splendid with the first ever meeting between Ashfield and Girvan kicking off in murky conditions. The three points today were valuable for both sides after an indifferent start to the season for the teams. Girvan started the better with a wind behind them and shot just wide after eight minutes. Ashfield responded a minute later with Craig Smith shooting over from twenty five yards after a weaving run.

Both sides were looking to play quick passing football with the visitors having the upperhand in the early stages. The 'Seasiders' almost opened the scoring after eleven minutes after a free kick was headed across the Ashfield goal but Prior saved well from a second header.

Ashfield then responded with a great period of play after twenty one minutes. Ryan Cairley who was influential all afternoon clipped the ball to Craig Smith on the edge of the Girvan Penalty box. Smith raced to the bye line and whipped over a great cross to the back post area where Ali Martin was lurking but his shot slid just wide of the post with good pressure from the Girvan Defender.

It was Ashfield that were now pressing for the opening goal. Craig Smith had a great chance after twenty three minutes but his shot from fifteen yards was well saved by the Girvan Keeper after a neat through ball.

Girvan looked very lively upfront and played some excellent passing moves and came close after twenty nine minutes with a vicious shot just flying wide of Prior's near post. The opening goal came shortly after and it was the vistors that claimed it. Girvan made the Ashfield defence to hurry and the ball was played back to Prior at speed. The Ashfield stopper could only slice his left foot clearance to the Girvan Midfielder who steadied himself before unleashing a volley from twenty yards that crashed into the net. Ashfield 0 Girvan 1.

Ashfield came back strongly after this setback with Cairley shooting wide after thirty eight minutes. Girvan had taken confidence from the opening goal and almost snatched a second after forty four minutes. Ashfield were caught out with a quick corner which was delivered into the Ashfield box, a scramble ensued and Prior had to save from almost point blank range to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Ashfield had the last chance of the half with O'Donnell blasting a shot but the Girvan keeper got down well to save.

HALF TIME: ASHFIELD 0 GIRVAN 1

The second half commenced with rain fall making the surface even more treacherous. Girvan still looked a real threat and almost scored a second after fifty minutes. A poor pass was intercepted by the Girvan player who unleashed a 'rocket' of a shot that beat Prior but it crashed off the bar and over.

The woodwork was to come to the rescue again two minutes later but this time for Girvan. Craig Smith was sent clear down the right side of the penalty box and a 50/50 challenge with the Girvan Keeper resulted in the ball squirming off the base of the post and then cleared for a corner.

The 'Field' were now dominating the match pressing for the equaliser and again Craig Smith had a golden opportunity on the hour mark but his shot just missed the far post after good play from Thomson and O'Donnell. This did not deter Ashfield as they scored the equaliser two minutes later. A quick corner was played to the edge of the box with Ryan Cairley smashing the ball netbound only to see it blocked, but Mark Thomson capitalised from the blocked shot and stroked the ball low and hard into the net from fourteen yards. Ashfield 1 Girvan 1.

It was now end to end stuff with both sides looking for a winner. Girvan were awarded a free kick just outside the Ashfield box after sixty seven minutes. The Ashfield wall stood firm as the ball flicked off a shoulder and narrowly missed Prior's post for a corner.

The match entered the last ten minutes with both sides looking for a late winner and it looked as if Girvan had got it after eighty one minutes. A free kick was floated into the Ashfield box which was headered into the Ashfield net but the Assistant Referee had his flag up for offside.

This seemed to be a turning point even late on in the match and eventually a winner was scored with five minutes left on the clock. Darren O'Donnell received the ball deep in the Girvan half and swivelled before chipping a cross which two Girvan Defenders went for. The Defenders collided with the ball running to Tony Chalmers who calmly wrong footed the Girvan Keeper from eight yards. Ashfield 2 Girvan 1.

Girvan tried hard to force an equaliser but the Ashfield rearguard held firm to keep the points at Saracen Park.

FULL TIME: ASHFIELD 2 GIRVAN 1

Man of the Match:- A terrific performance against quality opposition with special mention for Darren O`Donnell, Ryan Cairley & Alistair Martin however Mark Thomson produced a real Captain`s Performance this afternoon scoring the equaliser.

Annbank United v Ashfield, West SuperLeague First Division. Sat.28th Aug 2009

Annbank United 3 Ashfield F & A C 0 , New Pebble Park, Annbank - Kick-Off 2pm

Blustery conditions welcomed the players onto New Pebble Park this afternoon with a vital three points up for grabs. Ashfield reverted to their away strip of Blue and Yellow with the home side in their Black and White attire. The match started with Annbank having a strong wind behind them but it was Ashfield that took the game to the Ayrshire outfit with Jim Smith trying his luck from twenty five yards that went wide of the goal.

Annbank came back instantly with a header that Prior saved with ease with only three minutes on the clock. The pitch did not suit fast flowing football which seemed to be to the advantage of the home side. Annbank came close after five minutes after a nice one-two in midfield sent their winger clear who cut the ball back into the Ashfield box but the resultant shot flew over Prior's crossbar.

Ashfield still persisted in playing the football and were almost rewarded after twelve minutes after a Passmore Free kick was met by Shaun Fraser, but his half volley went over the bar from ten yards.

Prior was kept busy in the Ashfield goal and tipped a shot over after eighteen minutes after good play from the home team. Ashfield were now imposing themselves on the match, and Chalmers had the next effort after twenty nine minutes. Passmore passed to the wee winger on the right hand side who then cut in unleashed a great shot with his left foot that skimmed the bar.

Ashfield had missed a few chances and were to pay for this as the opening goal was scored by Annbank after thirty eight minutes. A free kick was awarded to the home side which was delivered to the back post area. No Ashfield Defender could match the run from the Annbank player as he ghosted in to nod it past Prior from six yards out. Annbank Utd 1 Ashfield 0.

It was a blow to the visitors but it got worse three minutes later as Annbank extended their lead. A foul was committed almost twenty three yards out from the Ashfield goal. The Annbank player stepped up and curled a shot that looked to going wide but it sneaked inside the post with Prior fully stretched. Annbank Utd 2 Ashfield 0.

Annbank took heart from this second goal with Ashfield relieved to here the whistle go to end the half.

HALF TIME: ANNBANK UTD 2 ASHFIELD 0

The second half started with the 'Field' determined to get back into the match but it was the home side that almost scored a third after forty eight minutes. A free kick was floated into the Ashfield box with Prior racing out to punch but the wind deceived him and the Annbank player nipped in to header past him, but it drifted wide of the goal and the resultant shot just went wide.

Annbank now had their tails up and the post denied them after fifty minutes after a great free kick beat Prior but rebounded of the post and into his arms.

This seemed to spark the visitors into action as they created a series of chances starting with Maxwell shooting tamely into the Annbank keepers arms. The turning point of the match happened after fifty six minutes after a great ball was delivered into the Annbank box. O'Donnell swivelled and smashed the ball into the net which looked to have got Ashfield back in the match but the Assistant Referee had his flag up for a previous infingement. Very harsh decision!!.

Ashfield continued to pile forward with Craig Smith coming close after sixty minutes only to see his netbound shot tipped for a corner.

Chalmers for Ashfield was a real threat to Annbank and played Ali Martin clear after sixty two minutes. Martin darted down the left and fired in a low shot which was blocked by the Annbank Keepers legs. Another Chance gone!!!!.

Try as they might, Ashfield could not get that breakthrough to bring them back into the match and were punished as the closing minutes were entered. The Annbank player picked the ball up on the left side and played a cut back across the Ashfield box which was met superbly by his team mate who struck a vicious shot that beat Prior's hand and in to the top corner of the net. Annbank Utd 3 Ashfield 0.

It was now game over for the 'Field' as Annbank played the remaning minutes out. A set back for the 'Field'? , Yes, but again chances were created but not taken.

Man of the Match:- It was a tough ninety minutes for Ashfield today and only played in patches, with Tony Chalmers at the heart of every attack

Ashfield v Arthurlie, Sectional League Cup, Semi-Final - Tues 25th Aug.2009

(Arthurlie won 6-5 on Penalties)

Saracen Park was the venue this evening for the Sectional League Cup Semi-Final against a formidable opposition in Arthurlie. An excellent crowd of over 300 entered the turnstiles as the teams ran onto the pitch. Ashfield in their third kit of Red and White with the visitors in their light blue and white vertical stripes.

Ashfield had come into this semi-final winning all their section matches and Quarter Final and started the busier team. Tony Chalmers sent Ali Martin clear on the left after two minutes but the winger sliced his shot wide from eighteen yards. Arthurlie had not settled in the early stages and Ashfield were trying to capitalise on this. Mark Thomson floated in a free kick after ten minutes with Paul Maxwell just missing his header at the near post. Another chance for the 'Field' early on in this match.

The visitors slowly began to stroke the ball around and had their first chance after fifteen minutes but Prior in the Ashfield goal got down well to save from nineteen yards.

The match was played at a cup tie pace with neither side gaining an advantage and numerous free kicks being awarded. Arthurlie were awarded one of these decisions after twenty six minutes thirty yards from goal. A ferocious strike was delivered but the Ashfield wall bravely blocked.

The 'Field' had the best chance of the match on the half hour mark. A long throw into the Arthurlie box fell to Craig Smith who dribbled in and fired a low left foot shot from ten yards which was excellently saved by Parry in the visitors goal.

Chances were still scarce though and Arthurlie had the next one after thirty five minutes. A looping shot seemed to beat Prior but also missed the far post to his relief. Half time approached with the visitors finishing the stronger side. Another free kick was awarded after thirty eight minutes with the Arthurlie player bending it round the wall from twenty two yards but Prior got his finger tips to it and watched it go for a corner.

The referee looked at his watch and blew for half time with a Final spot still up for grabs for both teams.

HALF TIME: ASHFIELD 0 ARTHURLIE 0

The first forty five minutes was very cagey with neither side giving any space over the pitch. The second half, however, started at a different pace and again it was the 'Field' that created the first chance after forty nine minutes. Craig Smith picked up the ball and raced past his marker and released Martin. Martin darted to the bye line and cut the ball to the back post where Darren O'Donnell had a tap in from three yards but the ball squirmed off his foot and wide of the post. Happily for the Ashfield striker, the Assistant Referee had his flag up already for offside (You must have seen the flag up Dazzler!!!).

The game had opened up a bit with Arthurlie now imposing themselves strongly on the game, looking more eager than the first half. Prior came to Ashfield's rescue on the hour mark with a fantastic finger tip save to deny a netbound volley from twelve yards out.

Four minutes later Arthurlie had another chance from a free kick just outside the Ashfield Penalty Box. The Arthurlie stepped up and blasted a shot that just missed the crossbar by inches.

Ashfield were now pressed back but defending superbly, with Alan Smith and Jamie Coll solid at the back along with Gordon Passmore and Jim Smith. It was Ashfield that almost snatched the all important opening goal after seventy five minutes. A free kick was awarded which was whipped in to the near post and found the head of Paul Maxwell who glanced it netbound but again Parry produced a great save to deny the big striker. Alan 'Spider' Smith fired the ball back into the danger zone but Arthurlie scrambled it to safety.

Penalties were approaching now but Broadford for the visitors almost scored after eighty minutes but his lob just cleared Prior's crossbar.

The ninety minutes were up but Prior had still work to do to deny a twenty yard shot that came through a ruck of players
