Ashfield are drawn at home against Shotts Bon Accord on in the 3rd Round of the Central League Cup. The winner would then play either Rob Roy or Shettleston at home. The Shotts match will take place on Friday 23rd May with a kick-off at 7.30pm.

Promotion Race Scenario for Saturday 17/05/08. Port Glasgow only need a point against Dunipace for promotion. If Port Glasgow win then they are Champions. Lanark Utd must beat Glencairn to gain promotion. If Port Glasgow lose or Lanark Utd don't win, Ashfield are promoted.

Ashfield narrowly lose 2-1 this afternoon (29/03/08) against Yoker Athletic at Holm Park. Ashfield draw 0-0 with Yoker Athletic at Saracen Park this afternoon (15th December). A very competitive game with few chances until the latter stages of the match. A draw was probably a fair result. Match report and photos now on.



A brilliant Second-Half Performance from Ashfield, in awful conditions at McKenna Park, Govan this afternoon secured a memorable 4-2 win against St Anthony`s. Trailing 2-1 midway through the Second Half, Ashfield produced an amazing 25 minutes against a very good Team to keep the `field up with the leaders. Match report and photos now on.

Ashfield are defeated 1-0 by a controversial second half spot-kick at Port Glasgow this afternoon in a game spoiled by the Referee Mr Tait, who booked 5 Ashfield Players, sent 3 Ashfield Players off, and saw fit to award two penalties to Port Glasgow. Match report and photos now on.

Ashfield incredibly lose 6-4 to Maryhill F C at Saracen Park this Afternoon. Chalmers (2) & Maxwell (2) had Ashfield on easy street at 4-0, until Ashfield`s Goalkeeper McGovern received an injury. Ashfield then capitulated and conceded 6 Second Half goals to finish the Section in disappointing fashion.

Ashfield lose 2-1 at home against Clydebank. Thomson opened the scoring for Ashfield in the 2nd Half but a debatable penalty resulted in Clydebank equalising and then a goal 3 minutes from time sealed the win for Clydebank. Match report and photos now on.

Ashfield overcame a determined Dunipace side this evening at Saracen Park to conclude their League Campaign for Season 2007-08, amassing an impressive 41 Points!. Ashfield knew they had to win this match as the two teams entered the park in bathing sunshine.

Unfortunately Dunipace had been relegated earlier in the week but this did not deter the Denny outfit as they battled from the kick off and played some neat football early on. Ashfield soon got into their stride with Tony Chalmers relishing the hard ground and turning the Dunipace defenders at every opportunity. The first clear cut chance fell to the 'field' when Gordon Passmore delivered an inch perfect corner onto the head of Paul Maxwell but a brilliant reflex save from the 'pace' keeper denied the opening goal.



Ashfield started to take more control of the match and should have gone ahead in the 25th minute. Tony Chalmers skipped past the Dunipace defender and sprayed the ball across the goal to an onrushing Darren O'Donnell in the 6 yard box. It looked a certain goal as O'Donnell slid in but again the Dunipace goalkeeper sprawled to his near post and pushed the ball to safety. An excellent save from the 'Pace' goalkeeper.



These saves seemed to inspire Dunipace as they played long balls into the Ashfield area which was well marshalled by Davie Gumley, Alan Smith, Jamie Reilly and Mark Thomson in the Ashfield defence. The crossbar came to Ashfield's rescue after 30mins when the Dunipace forward connected from approx 25 yards. The shot beat McGovern in the Ashfield goal but crashed off the woodwork and was cleared to safety.



With half time approaching it looked as if Ashfield would have to grab that vital goal in the 2nd half but Paul Maxwell had other ideas and scored with approx 43 minutes on the clock. Ashfield were awarded a free kick midway inside the Dunipace half on the right. Mark Thomson fizzed the ball into the near post area which was met by Paul Maxwell who powered it high to the goalkeepers left and into the net. A vital goal for Ashfield and at a crucial time of the match. Ashfield 1 Dunipace 0.



HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 1 DUNIPACE 0

Ashfield entered the pitch for the 2nd half knowing that the next 45minutes were the most important of the season. To their credit, Dunipace started the better side with Ashfield looking slightly nervous at the back but neither side were creating any clear cut opportunities. Paul Maxwell was a standout for Ashfield in the air, flicking balls on and also combatting the aerial bombardment from Dunipace.



Ashfield could have sealed the points after 60 mins when Darren O'Donnell beat the offside trap after a great lofted pass from Passmore. The top scorer weaved inside the box and laid the ball to Tony Chalmers but his left foot drive flashed high and wide of the Dunipace goal. A real turning point occured with approx 20 mins left when the 'field were reduced to 10-men after Martin Gault received a straight red card. The Ashfield midfielder went in for a challenge with numerous players involved and the Referee deemed that Gault had followed through and kicked the Dunipace player in the chest area. The game was held up for 5minutes to allow treatment for the Dunipace player.

A real blow for Ashfield as Manager Stevie Rankin re-organised the formation. As you would expect Dunipace pushed forward and could have equalised with 10mins to go when a long throw was missed by the Ashfield defence and fell to the back post area. It looked like a tap in for the Dunipace striker standing there but Stevie McGovern in the Ashfield goal bravely blocked the ball and eventually cleared to the relief of the Ashfield bench and supporters.



The last 10 minutes were extremely tense but Ashfield played it sensibly and eventually the Referee blew the final whistle after 7 minutes of injury time.

Ashfield have now won their last 4 matches, with no goals conceded and now the pressure is on the challengers for the promotion race! It would be a remarkable achievement if Ashfield managed two successive promotions.

Pre-season Friendlies: -

Wednesday 25th July - Chryston Amateurs (a) - Ashfield won 5-0, goalscorers were Maxwell, Chalmers, O`Donnell (2) and Passmore, they seemed to play well with Smith making his debut for the field.

Saturday 28th July - Netherton Amateurs (a) - Ashfield won 3-0, goalscorers were O'Donnell, Maxwell and Tartaglia - another great win for Ashfield with no goals conceded

Wednesday 1st August - Waterside Amateurs (a) - Ashfield won 6-3, goalscorers were Chalmers, Maxwell(2), O'Donnell (2) and Thomson

Saturday 4th August - Johnstone Burgh (h) - Ashfield won 2-1, goalscorers were Chalmers (2). An excellent win against Premier Division opponents.




Sectional League Cup (Central) - Section 6 2007/2008:-

Yoker Athletic 0 v 2 Ashfield F & A C - Wed. 8th August 2007. O`Donnell (2) gave Ashfield a great start to the League Cup programme.

Glasgow Perthshire 0 v 4 Ashfield F & A C - Sat. 11th August 2007. Pattison, Thomson & Chalmers (2) continued Ashfield`s impressive start to the season.

Ashfield F & A C 1 v 2 Clydebank - Sat. 18th August 2007. Thomson`s 58th Minute goal not enough to prevent narrow defeat.

Ashfield F & A C 4 v 6 Maryhill F C - Sat. 25th August 2007. Ashfield incredibly led this match 4-0 early in the second half. Goals from Chalmers (2) & Maxwell (2) had Ashfield on easy street until an injury to McGovern in the Ashfield Goal hampered the defence. Ashfield then capitulated & let in 6 Second Half Goals to end Ashfield`s interest in this Cup for this season.




Central District League - First Division 2007/2008:-

Ashfield F & A C 0 v 0 St Anthony`s F C - Sat 1st Sept 2007. Stalemate at a windy Saracen Park this afternoon. Chances fell for both sides. Ashfield unlucky with a Garscadden Free-Kick.

Blantyre Vics 2 v 5 Ashfield F & A C - Sat 8th Sept 2007. Great attacking display from Ashfield in an entertaining end to end match. Tartaglia (2), Chalmers, Maxwell & Tolland scored for the `Field.

Ashfield F & A C 1 v 1 Rutherglen Glencairn- Sat 15th Sept 2007. Share of the spoils. Glens scored after 20 mins, however Mark Thomson levelled for the `field in the 90th Minute. What a cracking Free kick Mark !!!!

St Roch`s 0 v 3 Ashfield F & A C - Sat 29th Sept 2007. Great victory for Ashfield in a tough encounter at Provanmill. Goals from Maxwell (Pen), O`Donnell & Gumley have put Ashfield up to 3rd in the League.

Ashfield F & A C 2 v 0 Benburb - Sat. 6th October 2007. Another excellent victory for Ashfield. Second half goals from Chalmers & O`Donnell seal vital win against last years fellow promoted team.

Port Glasgow 1 v 0 Ashfield F & A C - Sat.13th October 2007. A second half penalty gave Port Glasgow the points in a game marred by controversial Refereeing decisions, which resulted in Ashfield being reduced to 8 men, and 2 spot-kicks for Port Glasgow.

Cumbernauld Utd 3 v 1 Ashfield F & A C - Sat. 10th November 2007. A goal at the start & end of the first half did the damage as Ashfield went down 3-1. Maxwell sent off in 2nd Half. Joe Tartaglia scored Ashfield`s consolation from the Penalty spot.

Ashfield F & A C 2 v 0 Larkhall Thistle - Sat.17th November 2007. An excellent performance from Ashfield and another vital 3 points. Goals from Kevin Miller and Darren O`Donnell sealed the points.

St Anthony`s 2 v 4 Ashfield F & A C - Sat. 8th December 2007. A terrific fightback secured all 3 points at Rain soaked McKenna Park. Goals from Tolland, Gault and a double from Gaynor produced an excellent away win for the `field.

Ashfield F & A C 0 v 0 Yoker Athletic - Sat.15th December 2007. Kick-Off 1.45pm. Stalemate at Saracen Park. A very competitive Match with Yoker having more of the possession however Ashfield had the best chances. A draw was a fair result.

Ashfield F & A C 0 v 1 Lanark United - Sat. 5th January 2008. Kick-Off 1.45pm. A goal on half-time secured the three points for Lanark despite long spells of pressure from Ashfield in the Second half. Ashfield have certainly played worse and won.

Ashfield F & A C 1 v 1 Blantyre Vics - Sat.26th January 2008. Kick-Off 1.45pm. A goal in injury time for Blantyre denied Ashfield the 3 points at a wet Saracen Park. After missing numerous opportunities, Ashfield scored with 7 mins to go. Tony Chalmers stroking home a penalty, after Paul Maxwell had missed an earlier spot kick.

Benburb 2 v 4 Ashfield F & A C - Sat. 8th March 2008. Kick-Off 2pm. A brilliant match and a great performance from Ashfield culminating in a 4-2 victory. Ashfield came from behind twice. Goals from Maxwell, a thunderbolt from Martin Gault, Chalmers and Miller brought a vital 3 points back to Saracen Park.

Yoker Athletic 2 v 1 Ashfield F & A C - Sat 29th March 2008. Kick-Off 2pm. Yoker sealed a vital 3 points today after a very hard fought encounter was witnessed. 2 goals in the 1st half for Yoker made it very difficult for Ashfield but to there credit pulled a goal back early in the 2nd half through Martin Gault. Ashfield piled on the pressure but could not find the agonising equaliser.

Ashfield F & A C 2 v 2 Port Glasgow - Sat 5th April 2008. Kick-Off 2pm. Ashfield secured a share of the spoils with a last gasp equaliser from Jamie Reilly - his first ever Junior Goal to the delight of the fans, players and bench. Mark Thomson had opened the scoring for Ashfield, however two defensive lapses put Port Glasgow 2-1 ahead until the final minute.

Ashfield F & A C 2 v 1 Cumbernauld Utd - Tues.15th April 2008. Kick-Off 6.45pm. Ashfield maintained their 2nd Position in the League after an excellent victory against Cumbernauld. Two brilliantly taken Goals from Martin Gault in the 2nd Half won the three points, with the visitors pulling back a consolation in the 90th Minute.

R`Glen Glencairn 2 v 1 Ashfield F & A C - Mon. 21st April 2008. Kick-Off 7pm. Goals in the First & last Minutes of the First Half were enough to see the `field go down 2-1. An excellent equalising goal in the 28th Minute from Paul Maxwell was not enough to take any points.

Lanark United 0 v 2 Ashfield F & A C - Sat. 26th April 2008. Kick-Off 2pm. Brilliant performance from Ashfield secured the three points at Moor Park. Goals from Darren O`Donnell & Tony Chalmers in the second half secured a vital three points.

Ashfield F & A C 1 v 0 St Roch`s - Mon.28th April 2008. Kick-Off 7pm. A Dramatic late winner (83 mins)from Mark Thomson secured all three points for the `field in a very competitive encounter against the `field`s bogey team at Saracen Park.

Larkhall Thistle 0 v 5 Ashfield F & A C - Sat 3rd May 2008. Kick-Off 2pm. A brilliant performance from Ashfield swept away promotion hopefuls Larkhall Thistle at Gasworks Park. Goals from Darren O`Donnell (3), Gordon Passmore and an own goal kept Ashfield`s promotion hopes alive.

Ashfield F & A C 1 v 0 Dunipace F C - Wed.7th May 2008. Kick-Off 7.15pm. A thumping header from Paul Maxwell two minutes before the Interval secured three valuable points. Fingers-crossed now to see if Promotion can be achieved for the second season in a row.

An awesome performance from Ashfield this afternoon at Larkhall at a crucial time of the season, and the scoreline does not flatter Ashfield at all, with the Larkhall keeper pulling off some excellent saves in the second half to keep the score down. A hat-trick from Darren O`Donnell, a header from Gordon Passmore and an own goal provided the scoring coupled with Larkhall losing their discipline midway through the first half and having two players sent off for foul and abusive language towards the Referee.

Ashfield came out in their away strip of Yellow and Blue hoops and Larkhall played in their traditional Red and White Stripes. It was the `field that started the brighter and stronger and tested their keeper within the first few minutes after the ball broke to Stevie Martin on the edge of the box, however his well hit shot was smothered by the impressive Larkhall keeper. Ashfield played at a very high tempo and this caused the `Thistle Midfield and Defence a few problems and it came as no surprise when Ashfield took the lead in the 17th Minute. A brilliant delivery from the left by Mark Thomson was expertly headed into the net by the in-form Darren O`Donnell to put the `field 1-0 up.



Larkhall Thistle 0 Ashfield 1. This was no more than Ashfield deserved and they were pilling on the pressure at this stage which was causing frustration amongst the Larkhall players, who were letting their discipline slip when decisions went against them. On the 22nd Minute, Ashfield went 2-0 up, after a lovely move by Tony Chalmers on the right found Darren O`Donnell, who was brought down inside the box. Larkhall were aggrieved at the decision however their defender did not make any contact with the ball. Darren `dusted`himself down and laced the penalty to the keepers left to the delight of the Ashfield support. Larkhall Thistle 0 Ashfield 2.


Tempers boiled over at this stage and Larkhall were guilty of some hefty tackles and minutes after the 2nd goal were down to 10 men after one of their players was sent off for foul and abusive language towards the Referee. Ashfield continued to concentrate on playing football and they were really on form this afternoon. In the 29th Minute a beautiful delivery from Man of the Match Mark Thomson was bulleted into the net by the onrushing Gordon Passmore, who`s header hit the roof of the net in seconds.



Larkhall Thistle 0 Ashfield 3.
Larkhall had been undefeated in 10 games, so this had been a really impressive first half hour for the `field and it didn`t stop there. After some excellent wing play the ball was delivered into the box and again it was Gordon Passmore who bulleted a header towards goal which came off the Larkhall defender and floated over the unlucky keeper into the roof of the net. Larkhall Thistle 0 Ashfield 4.



This was not the end of the half and the Larkhall No 7 who had been their best player in the first half lost his cool and was immediately Red-Carded for comments made to the Referee.

HALF TIME:- LARKHALL THISTLE 0 ASHFIELD 4

Larkhall`s 9 men came out determined to try and put a performance on for their fans in the second half and were playing better Football, however it was Ashfield that were carving out the chances. A lovely move on the right started by Davie Gumley was delivered into the box and the onrushing Stevie Martin looked destined to score until the Larkhall keeper produced a brilliant save to his right to deny Ashfield. Further efforts from Maxwell, Chalmers and a pile-driver from Gault almost increased Ashfield`s lead. However in the 75th Minute the `field finally hit their fifth after a brilliant solo effort from Ashfield`s top scorer this season Darren O`Donnell , who delivered a brilliant volley into the left hand corner of the net to the delight of the players, bench and support. Larkhall Thistle 0 Ashfield 5.



The `field`s dominance didn`t stop there and the Larkhall keeper produced a breathtaking save from Paul Maxwell`s header, before denying substitutes John Gaynor and Wes Pattison. The Referee brought proceedings to an end and once the `dust has settled`, this result must rank as one of Ashfield`s best performances for a number of years. Larkhall had not been defeated in 10 League games and at the start of the season were joint favourites for promotion. Ashfield played `total football` today and would have been a match for many Super League Teams this afternoon. The Management and Coaching Staff must take great credit for the Team`s performances this season and it is good to see that Ashfield are beginning to build up a support for their away games too. It may still be outwith their control, however a victory in the last game of the season v Dunipace at Saracen Park will put pressure on fellow promotion contenders Lanark Utd, Port Glasgow and Glencairn.

Man of the Match:- A brilliant all round Team Performance, and normally someone who scores a Hat-Trick would be guaranteed Man of the Match, however Mark Thomson`s Midfield performance was simply outstanding.

Ashfield hit the top of the table tonight after seeing off a very competent St Rochs outit at Saracen Park. The 'field' ran out sporting a new strip of all red with white flashes whilst the 'rock' were in their tradiitional all green tops, shorts and socks.


The match started at a great pace with both sides settling down quickly. St Rochs certainly did not look a side languishing at the bottom of the table and caused problems to the Ashfield defence early on which was dealt with by Alan 'Spider' Smith and Jamie Reilly. The 1st real clear cut chance fell to Ashfield when a long throw was delivered into the penalty box and onto the head of an unmarked Darren O'Donnell. Unfortunately his header narrowly edged past the near post and out of play.



Gordon Passmore then almost broke the deadlock after 30mins when he drilled a low drive goalwards which was spilled by the St Rochs goalkeeper. Tony Chalmers looked certain to score from the rebound but his shot clipped the post and out to safety.


It was not all one way traffic though as St Rochs number 7 made some mazy runs and good set play deliveries and 'rock' were a real threat to the Ashfield defence. Aitchison in the Ashfield goal made some timely catches at a crucial time of the match.

With half time approaching, the visitors should have taken the lead when St Rochs number 7 flicked the ball through to his forward who only had the keeper to beat. He sliced the ball narrowly wide and the teams went in at half time all square.

HALF TIME: ASHFIELD FC 0 ST ROCHS 0

Both teams now looked to win this match as they entered the park for the 2nd half. Ashfield started to take a grip in the midfield early on but St Rochs were battling hard giving no space for fluent football. 'Dazzler' O'Donnell was having an excellent match in the forward line for Ashfield linking up very well with an eager Tony Chalmers.


The game then went slightly scrappy as the referee tightened his grip on the match and blew for almost every challenge made. This suited St Rochs who seemed to be growing in confidence and frustrated Ashfield. However with approx 20mins to go it looked like Ashfield had made that vital breakthrough when good interchange play resulted in Stevie Martin being released down the right hand side of St Rochs penalty box, he lifted an inch perfect cross on to the head of Darren O'Donnell who guided it high in the net.

As the team ran off to celebrate, referee Mr Tait, had deemed the goal to be offside and the jubilation was short lived. A dubious decision but Ashfield came back again shortly. Paul Maxwell picked the ball up in the 'rock' half and entered the box but 'Maxi' sliced it past the post and it looked as if it was of those nights for the Possil outfit.

St Rochs had a great opportunity with 10mins to go when they were awarded a free kick just outside the Ashfield penalty box. The resultant shot was well blocked by a determined Ashfield wall and cleared to safety.

It looked as if that would be the final clear cut chance of the match but Ashfield had other ideas by producing a fantastic winner to the sheer delight of the players and supporters. With 8 minutes to go Ashfield pressed forward and O'Donnell was released down the right hand side of the park, who spotted Mark Thomson who had raced up from his midfield duties. The 'Dazzler' floated a perfect cross to an onrushing Thomson on the penalty spot who powered his header down across the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net!!. Ashfield 1 St Rochs 0.



Ashfield then closed ranks by taking off Tony Chalmers and replacing the pint sized striker with Greig Cross who shored up the midfield area. As much as they tried St Rochs could not break down the Ashfield defence in the last few minutes and referee Tait blew his whistle to end a pulsating match. Amazingly this was the 1st time Ashfield had beaten St Rochs at Saracen Park in almost 4 seasons and this could not have come at such a vital time for a fantastic Ashfield team.

FULL TIME: ASHFIELD FC 1 ST ROCH'S 0

Man of the Match: Many candidates for this match with Mark Thomson, Tony Chalmers, Davie Gumley and Jamie Reilly all having a great game but Darren O'Donnell was a stand out tonight. He was menacing upfront and delivered an inch perfect cross for the winning goal.

Ashfield produced one of their best performances of the season to beat an undefeated Lanark United side at Moor Park this afternoon. A healthy crowd welcomed both sides onto the park, and it was a very competitive match fom the Kick-Off. Ashfield made a couple of changes from their last match and had a very attacking formation out, looking to try and consolidate 2nd position in the League. It was end-to-end stuff during the first half without either team really making any clear-cut chances however the game was punctuated by fouls given by an over fussy Referee, who is normally one of the best in the Junior ranks.

Top Scorer Tony Chalmers was partnering his old partner-in-crime Darren O`Donnell up front and the two of them were causing consternation in the Lanark back four, with the latter blazing over an opportunity midway through the half. Lanark produced a couple of beautiful angled passes in front of the back four towards the end of the half which were brilliantly cleared by `keeper Aitchison, Davie Gumley and from one of the best players on the park, Jamie Reilly.


HALF TIME:- LANARK UNITED 0 ASHFIELD 0

No-one would have predicted the total transformation in the second half from a resurgent Ashfield side. Straight from the Kick-Off Ashfield attacked the top Team in the League and were ahead in the 48th Minute. Tony Chalmers picked up the ball on the edgeof the box and delivered a low hard cross which was placed into the corner of the net by Darren O`Donnell to the delight of the Ashfield support.


The question was could Ashfield build on this lead & the answer was a definitive `Yes`.
However before increasing their lead Ashfield had a couple of amazing let offs. Lanark were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box after an alleged push and Lanark`s Jaffray stood up to take it. He delivered a wicked curling free-kick which hit the underside of the crossbar and was eventually cleared for a corner.

From the resultant corner Lanark delivered a curling wind assisted cross which hit the inside of the far post and was eventually cleared to safety. Ashfield went straight up the park and scored an absolute cracker. The ball was played out to O`Donnell on the the left wing who evaded a couple of defenders and played a beautiful pass to Chalmers who took it on the run and lashed the ball to the Lanark keepers right and into the net to the delight of the Ashfield Team, who celebrated in style at the corner flag !









Despite Lanark putting heavy pressure on the Ashfield back four, they stood firm and it was Ashfield that could have increased their lead towards the end of the match with excellent efforts from Chalmers and Gordon Passmore. The Referee brought proceedings to an end in what was a very competitive and sporting match, however the Referee produced far too many bookings in a match that did not have a bad tackle in it. Ashfield take on the `Candy Rock` on Monday night in what is always a difficult match and Lanark will be looking to maintain their pole position when they take on Benburb and Port Glasgow in their next two matches.

Ashfield travelled to Fullarton Park, Home of Vale of Clyde this evening to face fellow challengers Rutherglen Glencairn. Both teams were really needing the points and it turned out to be a real cracker of a match. With both teams at virtually full strength the game kicked off at a frantic pace and amazingly Glencairn scored with the 1st attack of the match. A long throw was delivered into the Ashfield goalmouth and was scrambled clear to the edge of the box where a Glencairn player drilled the ball goalwards and 'the glens' number 9 tapped it in from a yard out. Glencairn 1 Ashfield 0.

A real stunning blow to Ashfield so early on but they rolled their sleeves up and came back at Glencairn almost immediately. Mark 'Thomo' Thomson sprayed a deep pass over the 'glens' left back to an onrushing Darren O'Donnell who controlled it well but lashed the ball high over the bar from 15 yards. A great chance for Ashfield went begging.

It was evident to see that Glencairn were starting to take control of the midfield area with Lee McShane having a fantastic game for them in the middle of the park. Alan 'Spider' Smith had a real tangle with a Glencairn forward and both players went head to head with each other, but the referee (who had an excellent match) saw sense and gave them both a yellow card.

Neither team could take real control of the match as the game went from end to end but it was Ashfield that got a well deserved equaliser after approx 30mins. Kevin Miller in the Ashfield midfield picked the ball up just over the half way line, swivelled past 2 onrushing glens players and stroked a pass to Davie Gumley on the right wing. Gumley went to the bye line and produced a telling cross onto the forehead of Paul Maxwell who bulleted it down and into the corner of the net. Glencairn 1 Ashfield 1.


This was now 'game on' as both teams pressed forward but Glencairn seemed to take a step up and started to put Ashfield under pressure with some telling crosses. Jamie Reilly in the Ashfield defence was having a great game and was making some timely challenges to thwart the glens forwards. Half time was fast approaching and it looked like both teams would go in level at the interval but Glencairn produced a killer blow on the stroke of Half time. Glencairn delivered a corner to the back post area where Lee McShane rose above the Ashfield defence and steered it across McGovern and into the net. It was clear to see that this was a major goal for Glencairn as McShane ran half the length of the park to celebrate. Glencairn 2 Ashfield 1.

Ashfield ran out in the 2nd half determined to get back on level terms after the body blow just before half time. Stevie Martin in the Ashfield midfield could have produced the leveller but his rasping shot from 25 yards went over the 'Glens' bar. At the other end McGovern kept the game alive when McShane was again given a free header however was finger tipped to safety by the Ashfield stopper. Ashfield tried to edge back in the match by changing their formation and playing 3 forwards but Glencairn were holding firm. O'Donnell should have done better when he was clear on the right hand side of the area but sliced his shot wide of the Glens post.

Glencairn looked to have produced a 3rd goal when McShane drilled a left foot shot goalwards from close range after a Glens corner but the dependant Reilly was on the goalline to clear to safety.

As much as Ashfield tried they could not break down the Glencairn defence and eventually the referee brought the game to a close. Ashfield battled hard but the scoreline was probably a correct result. If only Ashfield had taken their chances in the 1st half.

Ashfield now face Lanark Utd on Saturday at Moor Park. Lanark United are undefeated in the League but I'm sure the Springburn outfit will rise to the occasion.

Man of the Match:- Only 1 man can stand out tonight and that is Jamie Reilly, was superb in the challenge.

Ashfield took a break from their League Campaign and welcomed Dunipace Juniors to Saracen Park on a Cold night in Glasgow. Ashfield made five changes to the Team that played so well against Cumbernauld Utd, however found themselves up against a skilful and attacking Dunipace Side, who took the game to Ashfield straight from the start. A flurry of early corners from Dunipace were only partially cleared by a disjointed Ashfield defence and it came as no surprise when the `pace took the lead on the 14th Minute. Mark Andrews playing in the back four lost possession in a dangerous area and the `pace No 9 stroked the ball low and hard under the onrushing Stuart Aitchsion to put Dunipace ahead. Ashfield 0 Dunipace 1.

This goal gave the visiting Team confidence and before Ashfield had time to reorganise, Ashfield`s keeper produced a brilliant save low to his left. As the half wore on Ashfield gradually got into the match with Darren O`Donnell doing his best to spur on his team mates. The `field` should have been level after a mazy run from O`Donnell was swept across the goal for Paul Maxwell to put the ball in the net, however Referee Mr Tait disallowed the goal for Offside

. The game was an enjoyable spectacle now that Ashfield had come alive, however it was Dunipace that had most of the play in the first half. Just as it looked like the men in maroon would go in ahead at Half Time, Ashfield equalised. A long throw in from the right was missed by the Dunipace defence and Michael Tolland was first to react and lashed the ball into the top corner of the net to the relief of the Ashfield players, bench and support. Ashfield 1 Dunipace 1. It was a blow for a Dunipace side that had played so well, and never recovered from this setback.


HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 1 DUNIPACE 1

Talk about the old cliche `a game of two halves` then this game was a prime example. Ashfield from the Kick-Off were a completely different team and produced an excellent attacking display which should have resulted in a larger victory. Darren O`Donnell showed his early intentions with a low shot that crept just past the post and shortly after he again picked the ball on the left and weaved into the box, only to be upended, with Mr Tait immediately pointing to the spot. The `Dazzler` dusted himself down & placed his penalty low and hard passed the `Pace keeper. Ashfield 2 Dunipace 1.

Ashfield had reorganised the midfield at Half time and Martin Gault was delivering some telling passes. Ashfield should have gone 3-1 up when Mick Tolland played the ball across the empty goal for the onrushing Davie Gumley who somehow missed from 3 yards out. Gumley, who put in a really good shift on the left of Midfield, tried all night to get on the Scoresheet unfortunately to no avail however this was a big let off for the Dunipace side.

Two minutes later however and Ashfield were 3-1 up. A lovely through ball to Paul Maxwell, who raced in on goal before despatching a superb volley into the corner of the net. A brilliant goal ! Ashfield 3 Dunipace 1.

Shortly after that Ashfield threatened to go nap as they hit the woodwork on two separate occasions - both from headed efforts from Paul Maxwell. In the 78th Minute Ashfield eventually got their fourth after another through ball from midfield found top scorer Tony Chalmers who lashed the ball high past the `pace keeper and in off the underside of the bar. Ashfield 4 Dunipace 1.

After this goal the `field made a number of substitutes but that wasn`t the end of the scoring in the match as Dunipace scored an excellent goal on the 90th Minute. The `pace number 9 who caused Ashfield problems all night got away from Murphy inside the box and placed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Ashfield net. Ashfield 4 Dunipace 2. That was the end of the scoring in a highly entertaining and sporting Match. Dunipace visit Saracen Park on League Business shortly and a repeat of this type of match would be welcomed.

Man of the Match:- Darren O`Donnell was outstanding throughout and deserved to score more on the night.

Ashfield produced an excellent Second half performance to take the three points at Saracen Park this evening. This result keeps Ashfield in 2nd Place in the League and despite Port Glasgow`s victory against St Anthonys, its `all up for grabs` in the final weeks of the Season.

Ashfield welcomed back Stevie Martin to the Midfield and this was the only change from the Team that drew 2-2 with Port Glasgow last time out.

Cumbernauld Utd are a very good Footballing side and started the match the brighter side, pinning Ashfield back in the early stages of the match. However as the half wore on Ashfield started to take a grip with O`Donnell and Maxwell very lively up front, and Gault, Miller and Martin winning more than their fair share in the middle of the park. It was pretty much end to end during the first half without many clear cut openings, with both defences playing well. Ashfield had a good shout for a penalty in the 20th Minute when Darren o`Donnell seemed to be brought down in the box, however the Referee was having none of it. At the other end, Cumbernauld`s Brown almost broke the deadlock when after a free-kick , the ball broke to him on the edge of the box and his volley went narrowly wide to the relief of Stevie McGovern in the Ashfield goal.


HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 0 CUMBERNAULD UTD 0

Both teams came out in the 2nd half desperate for the 3 points as a draw would probably not suit either team, and it was Ashfield that really took the game to the visitors. Just like Cumbernauld in the 1st half, Ashfield came out the starting blocks very well and had clearly increased the 'tempo' of the game. Stevie Martin in the Ashfield midfield was giving his counterpart no space at all and Gault and Miller began to feed Maxwell and O'Donnell in the forward line.

Eventually the deadlock was broken and it was Ashfield that got it with a blistering strike from Martin Gault. The ball was played into the Cumbernauld penalty area only for it to be half cleared to an onrushing Gault who caught the ball sweetly on the volley and it sped low past the keepers left hand and into the net. A fantastic goal from the midfielder. Ashfield 1 Cumbernauld Utd 0.


Ashfield never took their foot of the pedal and were causing Cumbernauld no end of problems. O'Donnell almost made it 2-0 when a cross from the right was glanced by him only to see a great save from the Cumbernauld goalkeeper. Cumbernauld began to slowly edge back into the match but Alan 'Spider' Smith was outstanding at the back and was winning almost every aerial challenge.

The next goal was going to be crucial and it was 'the field' that got it to seal the victory with approx 15mins left. Good link up play between Chalmers and O'Donnell on the right hand side resulted in a terrific low cross being delivered into the Cumbernauld box. Chalmers looked a certainty to score but it went behind him but only to see Martin Gault charging in at the far side to rifle a vicious left foot drive, low and hard into the back of the net. Another superb finish from Gault that was greeted with great celebrations from the bench, players and supporters. Ashfield 2 Cumbernauld Utd 0.


To their credit, Cumbernauld never gave up and delivered some telling crosses into the Ashfield box only to be met either by Smith or McGovern in the Ashfield goal. However, with 2 mins remaining, Cumbernauld pulled a goal back with a nice finish from the striker. A high ball was sent into the Ashfield area and was met by the Cumbernauld striker who slid the ball past McGovern. Ashfield 2 Cumbernauld Utd 1.


A nervy last few minutes resulted in some good clearances from Reilly and Murphy and the Referee finally blew his whistle to end a very entertaining 90mins of football.

Man of the Match:- Martin Gault had an excellent Match capped by two fine goals, however Alan `Spider` Smith in the Ashfield Defence was outstanding throughout the whole 90 minutes.
