ASHFIELD 7 SHETTLESTON1
SARACEN PARK, GLASGOW, 26TH APRIL
7PM K.O.

The top two met tonight at a sun drenched Saracen Park . Shettleston were 3 points ahead of the ‘field’ in top spot and were looking to increase this to 6. Ashfield have 3 games in hand on shettleston and the springburn men were looking to take top spot with a victory.
Shettleston ran out with white tops and black shorts while Ashfield changed to their away strip of yellow and blue horizontal stripes.
The game started and it was Shettleston that looked the dangerous team, stroking the ball around and looking a powerful threat to Ashfield. With approx 10 minutes gone, Shettleston opened the scoring. A free kick from the right was swung in and not dealt with by the Ashfield defence, it rebounded off an ash field player and fell to the Shettleston number 11, he lashed it low and hard and it beat McGovern low down to his left which left a large following of shettleston supporters delighted. A bad start for the ’field’ but this early goal lit the fire for an amazing 80 minutes of Ashfield flair.
Ashfield were slowly getting there game together, and finally equalised mid way through the 1st half. A ball through the middle was met by Maxwell who took his time and fired low to the keepers right and in the net. Possibly against the run of play but the tide was turning - rapidly!
Murphy (ashfields captain) was spurring the team on and O’Donnell looked to have the beating of the ‘town’ defence. This proved correct as O’Donnell made it 2-1 after 35 mins. Shettleston never cleared the ball properly at the back and O’Donnell took advantage by smashing a drive which may have got a nick of a shettleston leg into the corner of the net.
Nearing half time Ashfield made it 3-1 and a major change to the game. The ball was flicked to O’Donnell in the Shettleston box who beat the last defender before being tripped by him. The ref pointed to the spot and sent off the shettleston defender as he stopped a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Normally Joe Tartaglia would take the penalty but he was sunning himself in Italy at the time!. Maxwell stepped up and slotted the ball low to the keepers left and 3-1!!!! - a massive turnaround in a potential title/promotion decider
HALF TIME: ASHFIELD 3 SHETTLESTON 1
What would ash field do this half?, sit back, play on the break or go for a 4th goal?. The question was answered not long after the break as Stevie Rankin and his coaching staff made a brilliant tactical change. He brought on Chalmers for Martin. Maxwell dropped back to midfield and chalmers took maxi’s place in the forward line with O’Donnell. This solidified the Ashfield central midfield but also gave maxi the freedom to make quick bursting runs through the Shettleston defence.
The 4th quickly arrived. A ball over the shettleston left back was met by a surging Maxwell. Shettleston appealed for offside but the linesman was well placed. A shot was looking good but he played an inch perfect ball to an incoming O’Donnell at the back post who slotted the ball into an empty net. What a great goal!! - great set up play and a clinical pass and finish!.
Shettleston were clearly enraged with the linesman as no offside was awarded. A volley of abuse was dealt to the linesman by a shettleston defender and the flag went up. The referee consulted with the linesman and another ordering off was administered.
9-men shettleston looked shattered but Ashfield never let up. A 5th went in shortly after. Chalmers was put through by Maxi and he held off the Shettleston defender to slide it low to the keepers left and into the corner!!
And it was not finished yet!!!! - chalmers picked the ball up on the left hand side of the shettleston box, he weaved and hit it low across the keeper. The keeper could only palm it out to a onrushing Gumley who slid it in!!! - 6-1!!!!!!!!
As the Shettleston support drifted towards the exit, Ashfield rounded it off with a 7th! - O’Donnell sliding in from an acute angle as the goalie could only palm it out from a Chalmers shot.
Wes Pattison came on for O’Donnell and almost scored straight away , chalmers weaved his magic and layed it to Pattison who unleashed a bullet which was well blocked in the shettleston goal.
Shettleston started kicking through frustration and maxi was taking most of the challenges. This was soon brought to a halt as Russell was brought on by Ashfield.
The final whistle sounded and a standing ovation was given to a delighted Ashfield team, manager and coaching staff.
Man of the Match: - In my opinion, the whole Ashfield team! - you could not single out 1 Ashfield player!
