Royal Albert (h) 5th May `07
ASHFIELD F & A C 3 ROYAL ALBERT 1 (H-T 2-0)
Kick off 2pm
Ashfield were today crowned as Champions of Stagecoach League Division 2 with a comfortable win over plucky Royal Albert at a sunny Saracen Park this afternoon. There were great scenes at Full Time on the pitch with a banner, Champagne and then the Management producing the Champions T-Shirts.

The game itself had a slight end of season touch to it with the sunny weather, dry pitch and bouncy ball, however Ashfield had more or less the game wrapped up at Half time. Like Wednesday against Stonehouse, Ashfield made an excellent start and took an early lead through Martin Gault`s cracking left foot effort after the Goalkeeper had produced a couple of earlier blocks. The relief was all there to see amongst the Ashfield players, and the play continued to be based in or around the Royal Albert area. Ashfield made it Number 2 after 25 minutes after breaking quickly from a period of Royal Albert pressure. Maxwell was put through and from the edge of the box placed an unstoppable drive past the Keeper to the delight of the players, bench and home support.
HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD F & A C 2 ROYAL ALBERT 0
Ashfield were now playing with a lot of confidence, however Royal Albert were extremely organised & fought hard for every ball. Goal Number three came midway through the second half and what a goal it was. With his back to the defender, O`Donnell swivelled and hit a dipping volley into the top right hand corner of the net. An absolute screamer. Martin Gault shortly after looked to have added a 4th however his shot was chalked off for offside against Maxwell.
Against the run of play, Royal Albert (R.A.) pulled a superb goal back. From fully 30 yards, R.A. No 8 hit a shot which dipped over McGovern in the Ashfield goal and in off the underside of the crossbar. The last few minutes were played at a leisurely pace until the Referee blew for time up and the celebrations began. A great achievement for Ashfield to go up as Champions in a League with a lot of strong teams. Well done the `field !!
