Ashfield v Maryhill Sat.25th Aug.2007. Sectional League Cup

Ashfield F & A C 4 Maryhill F C 6, Saracen Park, Glasgow.

Ashfield sensationally went down by 6-4 at Saracen Park this afternoon in the final Sectional League Cup Match. The result does not tell the true story as Ashfield incredibly led 4-0 early in this second half.

Ashfield, who were playing in their traditional Black & White hoops, made a great start to the game, when `Captain` Maxwell headed home a Mark Thomson free kick in only 2 minutes. Maxwell almost doubled his tally midway through the half, however put the ball over the cross bar from five yards, before Tony Chalmers added a 2nd Goal on 26 minutes. Maryhill had good possession of the ball but couldn`t break down Ashfield`s strong defence down. Six minutes before the interval Chalmers added his second and Ashfield`s third goal with a well placed shot when he had a clear run at the Maryhill goal. Four players were booked in the first half - 2 from Maryhill & Garscadden and Thomson for the `field.

HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD F & A C 3 MARYHILL F C 0

Ashfield made a bright start to the second half and Maxwell added a fourth in the 58th minute after a blunder in the Maryhill defence, which looked to have sewn up the points. With half an hour to go, Maryhill opened their account with a simple goal after good play on the left wing. Steven McGovern, Ashfield`s goalkeeper was injured which severly restricted his movement for the remainder of the match. Mayhill introduced substitutes which completely changed the pattern of the game & Maryhill scored 3 goals in a crazy 7 minute period to level the match. The equalizing goal was an own goal following a misunderstanding between Reilly & McGovern. In the final minute of the game Maryhill took the lead and added a sixth from the spot in injury team. There was still time for a Maryhill player to be ordered off before the Referee ended preceedings. An unbelievable second half & Ashfield will have to put this result out of their minds as they prepare for the first League Match of the season against St Anthony`s next Saturday at Home.

All credit to Maryhill who never gave up even at 4-0 down, teriffic comeback lads and all the best for next season. Despite McGovern getting an injury we should still have seen the game out .........the defending??, let's be honest was woeful although I don't think we should ponder on it. The positive we can take from the game was that we scored 4 good goals from Maxi and Chalmers, thought they were both excellent especially in the 1st half. It's great to see all of our strikers pitching in with goals lately...that's at least something Rankin can be pleased about from Saturday when he's reminiscing. Bring on the Ants and let's hope there's a Backlash after a horrible weekend. (p.s i'm a Killie fan also)
