Ashfield F & A C 2 Maryhill 0 , Saracen Park, Glasgow - Kick-Off 7pm

At last a summers night to welcome the players onto Saracen Park this evening. It was the first time these sides had met since the promotion decider last season and it was the 'Field' that emerged on top again.

A minute's silence was observed prior to kick off for an Ashfield Legend, John Owens, who sadly passed away last month. It was great to see a large contingent of his family attend the match.

Ashfield started the match the better side, stroking the ball around and looked solid at the back. The pressure finally told after only ten minutes. Gordon Passmore picked the ball up ont he centre circle before floating a perfect pass to Darren O'Donnell who controlled the ball with his first touch and 'dinked' the ball over the onrushing Maryhill keeper. The 'Field' maintained the pressure after this goal and with Craig Smith racing down the right side after sixteen minutes before cutting the ball to the back post for the onrushing Ali Martin. The Maryhill defender just slid in to block Martin's net bound effort.

Maryhill were finding it hard to make an impact on the match but they had their first half chance after eighteen minutes with a twenty five yarder that rose over McGovern's crossbar.

Mark Thomson was having an exellent match in the midfield area with Martin Gault and Gault was the next Ashfield player to start an attack after twenty seven minutes. He picked the ball up after twenty seven minutes and released Ali Martin who cut into the box but saw his shot across the keeper glide wide of the post.

The match then turned slightly scrappy but Ashfield were in full control at this stage. Jamie Coll at the back was mopping up any Maryhill attacks with ease.

Mark Thomson was the next to almost score a second for the home side. Gordon Passmore whipped in a free kick which was met by the head of 'Thomo' but it crepped over the bar.

Half time approached with Tony Chalmers firing a shot from twenty yards which was well saved by the Maryhill stopper.

HALF TIME: ASHFIELD 1 MARYHILL 0

Maryhill were looking to produce a better second half performance but it was Ashfield that still pressed forward after the interval. Goalscorer O'Donnell crossed brilliantly after fifty one minutes to Ali Martin but his header was grasped by the keeper.

Maryhill started to squeeze the Ashfield midfield and almost scored an equaliser after fifty nine minutes. A long throw was delivered into the Ashfield box and caused concern as it dropped in the six yard box with a tangle of legs trying to poke it in but McGovern bravely smothered the ball to the relief of the home support.

Chances were now becoming scarce as neither side wanted to concede. O'Donnell was tormenting the Maryhill defence with his runs and great hold up play.

The next goal would be vital in this match and it was delivered after seventy one minutes. Ashfield were awarded a free kick on the right side deep inside Maryhill territory. Mark Thomson looked up and curled in a perfect cross to Darren O'Donnell who had cut across his marker to bullet a header low into the corner of the net. ASHFIELD 2 MARYHILL 0.

This goal gave Ashfield some breathing space but unfortunately shortly after the goal, Martin Gault went down unchallenged as he was about to shoot at the Maryhill goal. It seemed that his studs had caught in the turf and was writhing in agony holding his knee. After lengthy treatment he was carried from the pitch in a stretcher.

The match went down a level after this injury with neither team creating a clear cut chance. Maryhill had the last effort after eighty five minutes when they were awarded a free kick just outside the Ashfield box. The Maryhill player stepped up and lashed the ball only to see the Ashfield wall stand firm to clear the danger.

FULL TIME: ASHFIELD 2 MARYHILL 0

Man of the Match:-
Jamie Coll was again outstanding at the back with Alan 'Spider' Smith. Mark Thomson was majestic in midfield but Darren O'Donnell was electric tonight and gets the vote, scoring the two goals and working his socks off all night

Attendance:- 150

Great result lasds. Well done to Darren on his 2 cracking goals and to the back four for another clean sheet. I would also like to wish Gauly all the best with his recovery from his knee. Keep up the good work lads.
