ASHFIELD F & AC 2 LARKHALL THISTLE 0 at Saracen Park, Glasgow

A very good performance from Ashfield saw them run out 2-0 winners in a tough physical battle this afternoon at a very cold Saracen Park. Goals either half from Miller and O'Donnell sealed a vital 3 points. This was the first time the Teams had met since 2002 and it was well worth the wait. Both Teams had a `real go` at each other with a lot of good football on show.

Ashfield started well and with virtually their first attack scored a cracking goal. The ball was played up to Tony Chalmers who attacked the Larkhall Defence with his usual vigour, the ball breaking out to Kevin Miller who lashed the ball in off a defender to put the`field 1-0 up after 10 mins.

The game ebbed and flowed and Larkhall put a fair bit of pressure on the Ashfield rearguard, however every time Ashfield attacked it looked like they would score. A lovely move in the 20th minute saw the Larkhall keeper deny Darren O`Donnell with his legs. 5 Minutes later and Ashfield should have been 2-0 up. A lovely move down the right, saw Tony Chalmers run clear of the Larkhall defence, one on one with the keeper, he placed the ball across the goalmouth for the onrushing Kevin Miller who looked like he had scored his 2nd, only to be denied by the Linesman`s flag. HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD F & A C 1 LARKHALL THISTLE 0

No changes at Half time, however the game started off at the same pace as the first. Larkhall were playing some good football, however Ashfield were so dangerous on the break and almost doubled their lead twice in the space of a few minutes when Tony Chalmers was sent through by the impressive Mark Thomson, who was playing in a more forward role, after the return of Reilly and Murphy to the Ashfield Defence, only to be denied by the Larkhall keeper. However in the 66th Minute, Darren O`Donnell put Ashfield 2 up with a deflected shot to the delight of the Ashfield players, bench and support. (See below)

Larkhall threw caution to the wind and made 2 attacking substitutes to try and claw their way back into the game. They almost pulled a goal back 15 mins to go after a lovely worked move resulting in a flashing header grazing the top of the Ashfield goal. Martin Gault, in the Ashfield midfield , almost increased Ashfield`s lead 10 minutes to go, but was denied by a goal line clearance. Larkhall were becoming more frustrated and tempers began to flare resulting in 4 bookings from the Referee, who controlled the match very well.

Ashfield played out the remaining minutes and this was an excellent performance against a very well organised and physical team. Ashfield travel to Yoker next Saturday in a repeat of the Sectional League Cup Match earlier in the season where two goals from Darren O`Donnell gave Ashfield a 2-0 Victory. A repeat of that scoreline will hoist Ashfield well into the promotion race.
